Selling Dogs

There is something particularly brutal about selling dogs for food. I wondered how I would react; after all, I had seen rats, grasshopers, guinea pigs and many other exotic species eaten without it really hitting home – but dogs? I have had dogs as friends! It wasn’t so much the fact of eating them, it was the way it was done. The market in Tomohon, Nth Sulawesi sells dog, as well as bat, snake, rat and pretty well anything else that can’t get away in time. The dead dogs are prepared by putting them on a fire to burn off the fur, leaving a blackened, swollen carcase, which is displayed for sale alongside the other delicacies. On the ground is a cage with more dogs. A man stands over them andstamps on the cage to quiet the wimpering. He holds a heavy steel bar, which seems likely to be the instrument of death. The dogs seem to know. I walk away. It shows us for what we are, another animal – no better and often far worse than the other predators on this planet we share.
