Artist's Description

Semeru is the largest volcano on the island of Java. It is located in the Bromo, Tengger, Semeru National Park at the east end of Java. This is a view from the dangerous side. You can clearly see the valley down the front side of the mountain where pyroclastic flows or lahars move down the mountain, directly towards where this photo was taken. We were standing on volcanic ash. I’ll be back there this July and hope to see some good fireworks. The alert status of the mountain was upgraded to level 3 on 22nd May due to hundreds of earthquakes and increased activity. This may mean that we cannot go to this particular location, nor climb the mountain, but it might provide some spectacular views of eruptions from a safe location.
