Artist's Description

This male Australian Brush-turkey has been building this one-meter tall nest for more than three weeks. Every so often it will wander around the top of the nest to check the height and by sticking its beak into the mound checking the temperature. Like some reptiles incubation temperature affects the sex ratio of the chicks. For example when the internal teperature is exactly 34 degrees Celcius the sex ratio will be equal, when slightly cooler more males will result and when slightly warmer more females are born. Nests have been recorded at around 1.6 metres tall and 5 meters across. These birds a quite tame at tourist sites and gardens but very timid in the bush. Taken at Australia Zoo, Beerwah, Brisbane, Queensland with a Panasonic Lumix FZ-18 camera.
