Artist's Description

Portrait of a one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius). Camels were introduced into Australia from the Middle East in the 1840s. Abandoned and stray camels formed feral poplulations that have now spread throughout the sandy deserts of central and Western Australia. Numbers are estimated at well over 100,000. Australia is now the only country in the world where camels live naturally in the wild. They are very conservative with water, though will drink up to 200 litres when water is available.
