This image comes from one of the more tragic Greek myths in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Aesacus was infatuated with a girl named Hesperie, and was chasing her through the woods when a snake bit her on the ankle and she died. Feeling sorrow and guilt over what happened, Aesacus tried to kill himself by throwing himself off of a cliff into the ocean. The gods saw this, and decided instead to turn him into the seabird known as a diver which throws itself into the sea over and over again but always returns to the surface.
