Artist's Description

1998. oil on canvas 61cm x 41cm
The Battle of Flodden near the border between Scotland and England at the start of the 16th century was a slaughter of ordinary men caught up in the conflict between neighbouring nations. Those that lost their lives were simple farmers and sheperds and blacksmiths.
The field that lies upon that once bloodied hill has a ghostly chill and an airless calm, as if the very sky fears to tread on this once terrible site. It leaves you cold.
This painting shows two men entwined in battle over a field of blood red flowers as described in the song ‘the flowers of the forest’.
