Expecting too much?

It’s been a year or so since I started taking photography seriously and I am loving it. But I am an impatient person, to say the least. I feel my work has improved by a few degrees, but I still have so far to go. I know several areas in which I am lacking, primarily lighting, and I know what kind of photography really gets my blood flowing; nature and landscape. Money is a huge obstacle in this field though. I yearn for a much better lens, specifically a 600mm, amongst a plethora of other things – too many to mention. Am I being too impatient or should I expect so much out of myself in order to advance to the next level? I didn’t expect National Geographic to be knocking on my door after a year, but then again, I kind of did, or at least dreamed they would.
