Artist's Description

This pattern is from an 18th-century book!

These marbled endpapers are found in Guillaume André René Baston’s Narrations d’Omaï, insulaire de la mer du Sud published in Paris in 1790.

Marbled paper produced in France during the early 17th century was purchased by rich connoisseurs, who marvelled at its mysterious qualities. It remained popular until the middle of the 18th century, before the high standards of productivity and creativity began to decline.

This book is held in the State Library Victoria Rare Books Collection (call number: RARES 843.69 B29). Visit the Library to view this stunning work on display in the World of the Book exhibition, open daily.
