Artist's Description

My tree today is a good example of how hard it is to acurately reproduce the colors in a painting. The original is for the most part black, but I don’t paint with black. I make black by mixing paynes grey, winsor or sap green and alizarin crimson or cad red. So there are some very subtle warm and cool tones within this tree, but my scanner just sees black.

This is my “Black Friday” tree.

I think this tree is very representative of the capitalism that is on display on this “Black Friday”. It’s engaging and fun to look at. It definitely has some great design elements to it. In some ways it is very beautiful, however at the same time, it is twisted, dark and ugly. Sometimes it’s not so easy to put things squarely in the “Beautiful” or “Ugly” category.
