PhotoShop Tip: Adjustment Layers

An adjustment layer is a layer that only contains an adjustment such as levels or hue/saturation. They are more versatile than simply applying an adjustment to a layer in your image. For one thing they do no damage to pixels where applying an adjustment directly to a layer will permanently alter the image. Another is that the adjustment layer provides a layer mask so you can apply the adjustment to specific parts of the image by painting on the layer mask. Adjustment layers give you the ability to change the blend mode and opacity, and if you double click on the adjustment layer icon if will bring up the dialog box so you can make changes to the settings.
