This is my great aunt, Dame Florence Hancock who, although was one of the the first lady presidents of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and a Director of the BBC, was to me just ‘Auntie Floss’ and someone who spoiled me! Lovely gentle lady that I miss very much. She was born in 1893 and died in 1974. This photo was taken about 40-50 years ago and a copy is in the National Portrait Gallery in London. I can remember the huge original hanging in my grandmother’s hall (her sister) at the bottom of the stairs. As a child I never appreciated who she was in status but certainly appreciated who she was as a person and relative. I’m not sure whether this would fit in the ‘Celebrities’ group or not, as she was a very well known figure in Parliament in her day. She fought relentlessly for equal pay for women. A great lady.
Had to do some restoration work as the original had been folded in the middle.
