Dateline: Severance Hall – Cleveland, Ohio – Something that everyone should know about Cleveland is that, for years now, it has been one of the “big five” homes of world class orchestras. Along with the New York Philharmonic, The Boston Symphony, The Philadelphia Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra is set apart in an elite award winning group by sheer number of fans, performance records and albums produced. Some say that the “big five” is Northeast/Midwest United States biased. Some have even suggested that there should be a “big ten” including Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , Minnesota Orchestra , and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. To be sure, it is no picnic in the park to rank these fine urban endowments, however, as far as ticket sales, world class professionalism, world wide popularity and albums currently available are concerned, the “big five” still take the cake and eat it too.
