Artist's Description

The Cleveland Trust Company had a history dating back to 1894, the bank eventually became the regional giant known as Ameritrust. When the financial mega bank fell on hard times, they entertained proposals from National City Bank, Banc One, and Society Corporation for their pending purchase. Ameritrust accepted Society’s offer on September 13th 1991, thereby effectively ending its long association and investment in Cleveland. It is interesting to note that not only is Ameritrust defunct, but so are: National City Bank of Cleveland, which was bought by PNC of Pittsburgh and its brand name NCB retired on June 14th, 2010; Banc One of Columbus, which became Bank One of Chicago in 1998 was liquidated by 2004; and of course, most famously, the all important and for years unattainable Cleveland Society Bank Corporation was all but merged with New York KeyBank Corporation by March 1st, 1994. The KeyCorp is, of course, now headquartered in Cleveland’s Key Tower at historic 127 Public Square.
