Artist's Description

Glancing out the window, I see the time draws near.

Grandfather Sun, weary from a day’s work

is heading off to bed.

I hurry, camera in hand, to the yard

knowing the setting sun waits for no one,

and stake claim to my spot to watch the sun set.

Dragonflies zoom past me

Mosquitoes buzz by, sniffing…

Me, tasting the splendor of the buttery sun,

and them taking bites out of me.

As the sinking disk hovers among the trees,

then slips coyly behind them

its orange glow filtered by their branches,

it winks at me to say good night.

Inside supper dishes wait for washing.

Family and friends continue talking,

but I’ve managed to steal away quietly

to bid the sun farewell.

My day, full and fruitful, comes down to this…

these last few minutes of daylight

of watching swaths of orange and gold

spread like honey across the sky.

It leaves me wanting more…

But it has other places to be…

Other skies to fill with it golden show…

Other mortals to dazzle.

Taking the golden sky with it

As it falls below the horizon,

I’m left with the gloaming,

and so glad that I took the time

to watch the sunset.
