Had We the Breath

there’s a song for winter
we’d sing it at the solstice-
the shortest day we live each year
but i don’t know it.

i can’t remember the words we’d sing
nor does it really concern me.
sender, to this i’d return you-
the colorless dress you sent.

the sun, hidden from plain view,
it’s light defeated by her clouds.
we’ll be frozen tonight, together,
though we’re still apart.

there’s a song for spring,
we’d sing it right now, had we the breath,
the first day i long for each year,
but i don’t know when it’s coming.
