Zen to I is part of a two part triptology painted for The 2009 Liverpool Art Society Annual Exhibition, Themed “What is Asian”

Asia is made up of many different cultures, with the common bond of steeped tradition. Tradition which delivers harmony, stillness, acceptance and inner peace. Asia is an area that until fairly recently was isolated from the western world. Now it is at the hub of technology, manufacturing, textiles and many more.
This led me to contemplate the impact of capitalism and modernization on tradition (beliefs, values, fashion, manufacturing, environment etc). What a culture shock, what a disruption to inner harmony. What an amazing journey, what excitement.
The stillness of a Zen garden. The raked gravel, the heaviness of cold stone placed upon cold stone. An environment that is peaceful, rich in tranquility. Soothing to your soul.
‘The busy agitation of ‘I’. Flashing lights, ringing phones. A constant bombardment. Insidious wires wrapping and weaving.
We can’t live without the tranquility of stillness, we can’t live without the convience of technology and constant questioning. We need both halves to create a balanced whole.

This work won 1st place “non-traditional”. Judged by Lindy Lee.
