"a flower poem for bobby" may 31, 2010

here i make my mark
on this one spot in all the land
i shoot through the dirt
by wind’s ease or forcing hand
& i patiently wait
while soaking up earth’s milk
nurturing me for life
till i then soon begin to wilt
but my roots break out
they spin & spiral growing down
anticipation gathers
& i must get out of this ground!
the journey overwhelms
me, but i see that little bit of light
& i’m here right now
but i’m a stranger to this new life
so i hide away until
i’m far more beautiful & brave
to greet the unknown
& stare wilderness in the face
i know it’s my time
when i feel the sun on my stem
this blossom peaks out
& suddenly blown black by the wind
i twist & stretch excitement
with freedom & beauty i now know
look at me! i’m wild!
i’m every inch of perfection grown
nothing can break me
even though i’m delicate & fair
cause i’m pure & simple
& i live to complete & give this air
until the time comes
when my petals begin to fall
& i’m one with the soil
as if i was ever a flower at all
but for now, i dance!
& enjoy what i was made to be
a sight for sore eyes
that was once a sheltered seed..
