Life is a River

I sat on a porch swing
Talking with dad
Recalling old memories
And the good times we had
He’d tell of my childhood
And we’d laugh out loud
He’d turn and slap my back
And tell me he’s proud

He said son I won’t be here
For the rest of your life
Told me to start a family
And to find a good wife
Said get a good job
To support your kids
Looked into my eyes
Then he said this

Life is a river
We are the stones
Life can be rapids
Or it can be slow
Will you sit in the shallows
With no place to go
Or will you ride life’s river
And hit nothing below

Well dad passed away
Just a few days ago
I talked to the doctors
They said it wasn’t slow
Thought to myself that’s
The way he would have liked
Turned to my wife
On her shoulder I cried thinkin’

Life is a river
We are the stones
Life can be rapids
Or it can be slow
Will you sit in the shallows
With no place to go
Or will you ride life’s river
And hit nothing below

I was snagged in the river
The river of life
The hardest time ever
Thank God for my wife
She kept my chin up
When it wanted down
She could make my smile
Return from its frown she’d say

Life is a river
We are the stones
Life can be rapids
Or it can be slow
Will you sit in the shallows
With no place to go
Or will you ride life’s river
And hit nothing below
