Artist's Description

THIS SPOONBILL DUCK WAS COMING IN FOR A LANDING ON MONTEZUMA SLOUGH IN THE SACRAMENTO DELTA SYSTEM NEAR FAIRFIELD CALIFORNIA. THIS SHOT REMINDS ME OF THE XB-70 BOMBER THAT HAD WING TIPS THAT FOLDED DOWN AT SUPER SONIC SPEED TO CREATE WHAT THEY CALLED, “COMPRESSION LIFT”. THE IDEA BEHIND IT WAS TO COMPRESS THE AIR FLOWING UNDER THE WINGS, TO HELP CREATE LIFT AND INCREASE SPEED. THE XB-70 NEVER MADE IT INTO PRODUCTION, BUT THE DUCKS SEEM TO KNOW WHEN THEY HAVE A GOOD THING GOING. THIS SHOT WAS TAKEN WITH MY CANON EOS KISS REBEL 300D AND MY QUANTARAY 70-300 TELEPHOTO LENS. THE DUCK HUNTERS THAT SHOOT ON THE LAND WHERE I FISH, AREN’T REAL HAPPY HUNTERS THESE DAYS. IT SEEMS THAT THE DUCKS DON’T SHOW UP UNTIL ABOUT 3 WEEKS AFTER DUCK SEASON ENDS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA’S DELTA SYSTEM. THE FOLKS THAT OWN THE 240 ACRES WHERE I FISH, FIGURED UP THE COST OF SHOOTING ONE DUCK LAST YEAR. AFTER MORTGAGE PAYMENTS AND UP KEEP FOR THE PUMPS AND TRACTORS AND THE LIKE, THEY FIGURED IT COST THEM ABOUT $2300 PER DUCK. THAT’S SOME EXPENSIVE WATER FOWL.
