Artist's Description

IN 1979, I WENT TO MARINE WORLD, IN SAN RAFAEL CALIFORNIA. MY FIANCE AND HER FATHER AND HIS GIRLFRIEND ALL HAD A NICE TIME WATCHING THE DIFFERENT WILD LIFE EXHIBITS. THE LIONS AND TIGERS WERE FANTASTIC, THE BIRDS WERE ALL VERY COLORFUL, THE MONKEYS WERE FUNNY, THE ELEPHANTS EVEN PUT ON THEIR OWN KIND OF SHOW. BUT, I THINK I LIKE THE DOLPHINS BETTER THAN ANY OF THE OTHERS. HERE, A BOTTLE NOSE DOLPHIN FLIES ALONG SIDE A PILOT WHALE, WITH ANOTHER DOLPHIN ON THE OTHER SIDE. I THINK, SINCE I COULDN’T SEE THE OTHER SIDE, I CAN ONLY PRESUME IT IS THERE. SO IN A SENSE THE TWO DOLPHINS ARE GUIDING THE WHALE. SO, I THOUGHT THE TITLE “NAVIGATOR TO PILOT”, WAS APPROPRIATE FOR THIS SHOT SINCE THE WHALE IS A PILOT WHALE. HEHE. I WAS SURPRISED TO GET THIS SHOT. I WAS USING A CANON F1 WITH A 100-200 TELEPHOTO LENS. EVERYTHING WAS MANUAL, THE FOCUS, THE SHUTTER, THE APPERATURE, EVERYTHING. I LEARNED A LOT USING THAT F1, LIKE HOW TO PROPERLY EXPOSE NEGATIVE FILM AND SLIDE FILM. I ALSO WASTED A LOT OF FILM WHILE LEARNING THOSE VERY IMPORTANT LESSONS. I’M SO GLAD FOR DIGITAL NOW, ALTHOUGH IT WILL NEVER REPLACE FILM, IT SURE IS HANDY. THE MARINE WORLD THAT WAS IN SAN RAFAEL IS NOW LOCATED IN VALLEJO CALIFORNIA. I GUESS IT WAS JUST TOO FAR FOR PEOPLE TO DRIVE TO IN IT’S OLD LOCATION.
