Artist's Description

FEATURED MARCH 17, 2011

THIS IS THE WAY MY BODY FEELS AFTER 40 MINUTES OF FIGHTING A 90 POUND STURGEON. I’VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO RELATE HOW I FEEL AFTER I CATCH A LARGE FISH LIKE THIS STURGEON. SINCE I HAVE POST POLIO SYNDROME, MY MUSCLES FEEL LIKE THEY ARE IN BURNING HELL AFTER SUCH AN EFFORT. IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN ALWAYS DESCRIBE TO SOMEONE ELSE, UNLESS THEY HAVE HAD THAT SAME FEELING THEMSELVES. THE BACK DROP PHOTO WAS ORIGINALLY AN IMAGE OF A BBQ PIT FIRE, THAT I TOOK TO THE DIGITAL DARKROOM AND USED THE POLAR COORDINATE FROM CENTER TO EDGE FILTER. THEN I ADDED A LENS FLAIR OR TWO WITH MANIPULATION OF THAT FILTER SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I GOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR, THEN I CUT AND PASTED A PHOTO OF ME HOLDING UP A 90 POUND STURGEON. THAT WAS NO EASY TASK EITHER, IT TOOK EVERY THING I HAD TO LIFT IT’S TAIL ONE INCH OFF THE DECK. THE LAST STURGEON I CAUGH, WEIGHED 110-125 AND IT WAS THE SAME LENGTH AS THIS FISH, ONLY I COULDN’T LIFT THE SECOND ONE OFF THE DECK AT ALL. NOW WHEN I LOOK AT THIS PHOTO, I CAN REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO “FEEL THE INTERNAL BURN” AND BE THANKFUL THAT IT ONLY COMES AROUND ONCE EVERY SIX MONTHS OR SO. THAT’S HOW LONG IT USUALLY GOES BETWEEN STURGEON CATCHES. BOTH IMAGES WERE TAKEN WITH MY CANON EOS KISS REBEL 300D AND MY QUANTARAY 75-300MM AF MACRO F:4/5.6:1 TELEPHOTO LENS. THE PERSON THAT HELPED ME GET THIS FISH FROM THE WATER UP TO THE FISHING DECK, IS THE PERSON THAT TOOK THE PHOTO. I WAS ON A PRIVATE FISHING DECK, 7 FEET OFF THE WATER AT LOW TIDE, SO I DEFFINATELY NEEDED HELP GETTING THIS BIG FISH UP ONTO THE DECK, I THOUGHT BO WAS GOING TO JUMP IN THE WATER TO GET THE FISH UP. I WAS FISHING IN MONTEZUMA SLOUGH, NEAR FAIRFIELD CALIFORNIA. AFTER ALL PHOTOS WERE TAKEN, THE FISH WAS MEASURED, WEIGHED AND THEN RELEASED BACK TO THE WATER FROM WHENCE HE CAME. UPDATE MARCH 19, 2011. FOR SOME REASON, WHEN I LOOKED AT THIS IMAGE THIS MORNING AND AS I WAS ADDING IT TO MORE GROUPS, A POEM ABOUT FISHING CAME TO MY MIND. SO, I THOUGHT I WOULD POST IT ALONG WITH THE EXSISTING STORY LINE. I HOPE IT MAKES SENSE TO YOU WHEN YOU READ IT.

A PIECE OF BAIT GOES ON A HOOK,
THE LINE IS CAST IN A LAKE OR BROOK.
A FISH SWIMS BY AND TAKES A LOOK,
THEN TAKES THE BAIT AND GETS THE HOOK.

THE LINE STRETCHES TIGHTLY,
THE FISH STRUGGLES MIGHTLY.
YOUR HEART STARTS TO POUND,
AND YOU CRANK ANOTHER ROUND.

THE FISH PUTS UP A FIGHT AND TRY AS HE MIGHT,
HE JUST CAN’T RUN FOR HIS HOME.
YOU PULL ON THE ROD AND REEL IN SOME LINE,
THAT BRINGS HIM YOUR WAY, JUST IN TIME.

HAD THE FISH JUST ONE MORE INCH,
THAT FISH WOULD HAVE BEEN A TASTEY DISH.
CAUSE I LIKE FISH AND I LIKE BEEF,
BUT MY FAVORITE OF ALL
IS THAT SWIMMING MEAT.

IT’S WHITE AND FLAKY
MOIST AND TENDER,
WHEN IT’S A LEGAL FISH,
IT’S LIFE IT WILL RENDER.

FOR AS A SPORT FISHERMAN,
I GIVE THE FISH A CHANCE.
ALL I REALLY WANT,
IS A FIGHT AND QUICK GLANCE.

A PHOTO IS NICE, FOR IT HELPS WITH ADVICE
AND PROVES ONE THING FOR SURE,
NOT ALL FISHERMEN LIE ABOUT A FISH, OR ARE OUT FOR THE KILL
AND THIS ONE WAS FACT, THAT IS FOR SURE.
