Artist's Description

THIS PHOTO IS ACTUALLY JUST ONE JET. IT IS THE AIR FORCES’ KC-10 FLYING GAS STATION. I WONDER HOW THEY CHECK THE OIL AND WASH THE WINDSHIELD AT 10,000 FEET UP. I CUT AND PASTED AS MANY AS I COULD GET ON THE PAGE, SO THAT IF THERE WERE ACTUALLY THIS MANY AIRCRAFT IN THE AIR, THERE WOULD BE “TONS OF FUEL” TO GO AROUND, FOR A LITTLE WHILE ANYWAY. THE AIR FORCE USED TO USE THE KC-135 WHICH WAS A BOEING 707 CONVERTED INTO A FLYING GAS STATION, BUT I GUESS IT DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH FUEL HOLDING CAPACITY. THE NAVY STILL USES THAT SAME JET, BOEING 707, FOR COMMUNICATING TO SUBMARINES AT SEA. THEY DROP DOWN A 5 MILE LONG ANTENNA SO THAT IT TOUCHES THE WATER AND THEY FLY AROUND IN CIRCLES AS ABOUT 5,000 FEET UP AND DRAG THE ANTENNA AROUND ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THE SUBMARINE FORCES.
