Artist's Description

THIS OLD FISHING DECK IS ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF A FRIENDS HOUSE, SITTING ON TOP OF A LEVY AND JUTTING OUT OVER A SECTION OF MONTEZUMA SLOUGH IN THE SACRAMENTO DELTA SYSTEM IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. IT WAS ORIGINALLY PUT THERE IN 1925 AND NOT VERY WELL CONSTRUCTED. AT THAT TIME IN AMERICAS PAST, THIS WAS CONSIDERED PROPPER CONSTRUCTION. THE MAIN HOUSE THAT IS ON THE PROPERTY WAS BUILT IN 1909 AND IT TOO WAS BUILT WITH MINOR CONSIDERATION TO STRUCTURAL STRENGTH. OVER THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND THE HARSHNESS OF THE ELEMENTS, THIS DECK AND RAILINGS ARE “BREAKING DOWN”. AT ONE TIME, IT HAD A WIND BREAK WALL TO THE WEST SIDE OF THE DECK, BECAUSE THAT IS THE PREDOMINANTE DIRECTION THAT THE WIND BLOWS FROM. IT ALSO HAD PARTIAL COVER TO GIVE SHADE AND SOME RAIN PROTECTION. BOTH THE WIND BREAK AND THE SHADE COVER ARE JUST PARTIAL MEMORIES AND NOT EVEN THE CARETAKER OF THE PROPERTY GOES OUT ON THE DECK ANYMORE. I ALMOST EXPECT THAT SOME DAY WHEN I GO OUT THERE TO FISH, THIS DECK WON’T BE THERE ANYMORE.
