Artist's Description

Acrylic on Canvas,
70 × 50 cm,
2011.

I thought with my next painting I’d start with a straightforward headshot and see how far I could go with it, The head I think is from a statue I found on a shisha tin box at home, I thought it was a good starting point as it was heavily contrasted, thus giving me an easy start with the tonal work. This was originally gold/green when I started. The more I worked at it, the more I suppose I just lost myself in it haha, it actually looks nothing like what it started off as. The ‘eyes’ were originally left white from the background, I decided to make them look somewhat artificial as opposed to just convinient holes in the subject.

Only problem with this was photographing it, this was a nightmare, after about 200 tries I managed it without reflection or colour distortion, I suppose it served as a good tryout with my new camera.
