Artist's Description

Taken across The Sound of Pladda from Port Dearg, near Kildonan, Isle of Arran, Scotland.

The island of Pladda (or Pladaigh) is small, flat, teardrop-shaped island, less than a kilometre in length and rises to just 27 metres (ninety feet) above sea level. Unusually for such a small island it has its own source of fresh water. The lighthouse dates from 1790 and was designed by Thomas Smith. It was the first light on the Clyde to be commissioned by the Commissioners of the Northern Lights and was automated in 1990.

Ailsa Craig is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) west of Girvan. It is 2 miles in circumference and rises to 338 metres, the island consists entirely of a volcanic plug of an extinct volcano that might have been active about 500 million years ago. There is a lighthouse on the east coast facing the mainland and a ruined keep of uncertain origins perched on the hillside above.
