Artist's Description

Now being a Mapmaking type for some 30 years, this photo was always a curiosity, and so it was fun to finally visit and capture it. The cross depicted in this photo represents the Geographic Center of Victoria. Located near the steps of the Mandurang Uniting Church which is just to the South-East of Bendigo, the Geographic Center represents the Centroid of the State, such that if the State of Victoria was cut out from a map and balanced on the head of a pin, this is the location where it would balance perfectly. Located at 36° 51’ 15" South, 144° 16’ 52" East, these coordinates are based on GDA 94 (Geodetic Datum of Australia) which is a slightly different datum than WGS 84 (used otherwise globally for such things as GPS positioning), given that the Geoid which Australia uses for its mapping is slightly different than that used by the rest of the world. The differences are fairly minute (< than a meter). Each State has a similar marker and it would be fun to visit them all one day.
