“NEVER LOOK DOWN ON ANYBODY
UNLESS YOU’RE HELPING THEM UP”
This was my Dad as a young man. He always tried to treat people kindly. He was a kind man in many ways even though he had his grumpy times and I believe that he suffered the scars, as most veterans did, from the direct invovlement of the brutal and raw battle of World War 2.
He volunteered to join the Navy and go to War (WW2) when he was 18 years old and he was on a destroyer and part of the Normandy landing.
Dad (Julian Maxwell-Batten) died in November 2007. He was the last living grandson of Sabine Baring-Gould (the author of the hymn ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’).
