Regardless

I am going to be the Mother I am
Regardless
My child will know my open heart
And the I-Told-You-So that
follows
He will know his mistakes
She will know accountability
They will learn adulthood
in their youth
I will show them the wind
does not stop blowing, just because
you cry out you are cold
A scar will not disappear
even though, you’ve learned
your lesson
I will show them
that sometimes when you fail
no hand will be near
to pull them up
I will show them this through my own
Resilience
I will mold them, so when they
Remember me
It is my love
That solidifies my stubbornness, that says
I am going to be the Mother I am
Regardless

Regardless

Artist's Description

This won first place in a literature publication called Red Wheelbarrow. I wrote it, while I was pregnant with my third child, about being a mother and the constant “advice” you get about your parenting skills. After much heartache about whether or not I was a “good” mother I came to terms with the mother I am, knowing I raise my kids correctly by instilling morals and values in them.
