How do you tell them it's not nearly here?

I was walking back to the libaray today after a meeting to do some more work, and I heard a child asking his mother. “It’s nearly Christmas.” to which the reply was obviously “No.” As christmas is a long way off yet, it’s not even the beggining of November yet, not after Halloween or Bonfire night! So when the young son told his mother “But they have them up.” Meaning the shopping centre across the road had some Christmas decorations up, how do you explain to someone so young that it’s not nearly here, but the shopping centres keep making Christmas earlier and earlier each year?
