Out of Sight, Out of Mind

A star turns red
I stop, beforebetweenbehind the lines,
Carved into road, carved into earth
And somewhere up and to my left, I see a window
Quite similar, indeed, to its adjacent brethren
But not drowned out by likeness

Its lack of cleanness is a rival to my own
A dust between indifference and devotion
An old, brown bookcase stands against the wall
And not romantic-old, but maybe half-forgotten

The wall is green
The soft pearl green you see in unlit places
And in hospitals
The ceiling is a muted white,
Or tries to be,
All watermarked and tired
There hangs a something –
It pretends to be a chandelier,
But it is toothless

A table stands beneath
I can’t quite see it, but I know it’s there,
And what it looks like
A teacup floats, half-way submerged into the sill
Until it’s lifted up and almost out of sight,
To invisible lips, by invisible hands

The tea is sweet, and good, and wholesome
I can’t see my lips, either
So I can taste it

A star turns green
The lines loosen their grip
My right foot moves, and I with it
Still thankful for the tea
And knowing kinship
With all that’s out of frame
