Equinox

A road diverged in a yellow wood
                        (It’s always autumn here)
With room on either side for one or two,
    But not for both
So there is standing,
    Wringing of hands and hearts
        To tearful bloodless fare-thee-wells
    Exchanging tokens to remember by
                        (Excuses to forget)
    The I-in-you? And I have you-in-I
                        (The images don’t match,
                                      they never did,
                                                    nor did they have to)
Not a fair trade by any stretch
        But gift and gift entwined—
                                                    Indeed, as should be
And having picked up burdens
Not of the self, but of the parting
Foot follows foot, sigh sigh, tear tear
Caressed by echoes until sound no longer carries
When burden must be borne by one
And then one knows
                          (With laughter)
That one was just as lost with two as is without
And two is just as lost without as was with one
                                                  Then, what has changed?
For one is one with two, two one with one
No more or less in parting
