Artist's Description

This striking sculpture pays homage to freedom fighter Dolores Ibarruri, the Spanish Civil War heroine known as `La Pasionaria’ (The Passion Flower). Made of fibre glass, it stands on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, Europe and pays tribute to La Pasionaria and to the 2100 British volunteers who went to war against fascism in the 1930s. Of the 534 of the volunteers who were killed, 65 of them were from Glasgow. The poster features her famous quote “Better to die on your feet than live for ever on your knees.”

The sculpture is by Arthur Dooley of Liverpool (1929 -1994).
