Artist's Description

Installed at the Couga industrial zone and deep water harbour near Port Elizabeth, this was the first wind turbine feeding South Africa’s energy grid. It was installed just before the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Due to lack of extra electricity capacity which would force rolling blackouts if a large power station were to fail, it was easy to find the will to install this wind turbine “to supply electricity to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium”. It is a 1.8 MW unit with a hub height of 95m and blade diameter of 80m.
