Artist's Description

Royal palace built in the 12th, 13th century and turned into a prison during the French Revolution. La Conciergerie is the prison where Marie Antoinette was tried and where she lived until her execution on the guillotine in Oct. 1793. This picture is the immense basement of the palace where the tribunal was set up to try the royals and others during the French Revolution. Most went from this site to their deaths on the guillotine.
