Artist's Description

This is the ship’s bell recovered from the wreck of HMS Edinburgh ,a cruiser of the Royal Navy torpedoed and sunk by a German U Boat in 1942. The Edinburgh was part of a convoy sailing from Murmansk in the Soviet Union , to Iceland. Most of the ship’s company was rescued before it sank , but 57 men could not be rescued.

HMS Edinburgh was carrying gold bullion as payment for weapons supplied to the Soviet Union by the United States. The ship was recovered in 1986 by Aberdeen – based diving company Wharton Williams Limited during a successful world record saturation diving operation to recover the 5 1/2 tons of gold.

Exhibited at the Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland , U.K.
