I hate to look in mirrors, the image that looks back is haunted.
She’s damaged beyond what the eyes can see.
I can see every wound and scar and fracture of her mind and soul.
I can feel and smell and taste them as if they were my own.
I see shame. I see guilt. I see first a young girl, then a woman betrayed
over and over again.
Her eyes hold those horrific memories. I avoid looking
in them too deeply. I could drown in insanity.
I compare her to everyone, the others, I call them.
I see that she doesn’t compare at all. She falls short in
every way. Why does she even try ? Why hasn’t she just given up?
Men have wanted her from time to time,
but she could never pass her own inspection.
Not good enough for anyone.
She was sure to disappoint.
So she’s hidden in my shadow alone and
afraid, unloved by herself and others and misunderstood by all.
She still has a heart that beats. It has so much love to give,
despite how many times its been broken.
She wants to love. She wants to trust. She wants to forgive and forget.
If someone would only take the time, take a closer look deep into
the shadow where she hides. Take time to dismantle the wall that she
has built for protection and security. Just take the time….
She might be persuaded to come out into the light.
