Artist's Description

Here you can see the controls for the retarders and sidings at this abandoned railway marshalling yard. At hump yards, such as this one, the carriages are moved around using only the force of gravity after the carriages are pushed by engine over an initial hump on entry to the site, as the entire yard is built on a slight incline from there on in. In order to slow and control the movement of the carriages, these retarders would apply a brake attached to the ground and rails to the sides of the wheel of the carriage, thus slowing it down
