THE STORM 13.7.07 - Holland

So I was incredibly bored at my job a few days ago (as I am now!) and thought I would try my hand at some writing to pass the time. It is meant to be summer in Holland at the moment, but it has been one epic storm after the other, so here is a little muse about this rather topical (or should i say tropical!) issue….

THE STORM 13.7.07 – holland

The land was flat and green, enveloped by a surreal and foreboding sky. The deep thunder of aeroplanes above increased the feelings of anxiety as I felt the first fine drops of rain from the upward swelling sky.

I continued cautiously on my bicycle, occasionally looking back at the bursting charcoal mass of clouds chasing me, and noticing that all signs of life had virtually disappeared.

The canals were becoming furious with the growing wind, once a calm and peaceful playground for the swans and water life, it now tossed and squirmed, creating a murky mass of moving water.

A strange stillness then came about like time hanging in the air. The few small creatures left scattered nervously to shelter.

I slowed the bike to a stop as the sounds and chants of the earth ceased to a gentle hum.

Strange and still silence……

A gigantic crack of booming sound shook through my chest and body, my heart jumped and seemed to stop for a second…. and then, as if it were compensation from the earth for frightening me, a dazzling display from the sky as the entire landscape lit up in a flying blanket of mauve, pink and purple.

The colours of the earth became dreamlike, as if I was standing viewing a moving abstract painting. Golden hues and soft pastels gently water coloured against a backdrop of sickly black, with a nervous brushtroke of neon lighting slashed across the sky.

So this is my summer in Holland….
