Artist's Description

The walk to the Pinnacles is very steep and I marvelled at how some of the trees were so clinging onto the rocks. Trees help to retain the soil on this old fossilised ancient reefscape (uplifted limestone), and in turn generate soil, as they break through the permeable rocks. For hikers, they also provide great natural steps. However, over time, as too many people use them, the soil may become compacted around the bases of the trees, essentially stopping the roots from being able to be the stronghold they once were. It is a delicate balance that we must think about when we are doing hikes like this. Remember, tread lightly.
