Artist's Description

This image shows rhubarb in a wooden trug being offered for sale at a Farmers’ Market. My first introduction to rhubarb was by my Grandmother who gave me pieces in raw sticks, together with a bowl of sugar to dab them into. I have always loved rhubarb (though cooked!). I like to retain that slight tartness of flavour rather than make it too sweet. Obvious dishes that come to my mind are rhubarb crumble and rhubarb pie. Apparently it is not a true fruit. Also it can have a laxative effect (ooh er).

I could never get rhubarb here in Italy so I grew some from seed and now several of my friends grow it in their gardens, but I have had to stress to my Italian friends that you cannot eat the green leaves, however inviting they look, as they are poisonous.
