Since our petrol prices hit $1.60/litre, news is that small business around the Adelaide periphery is suffering, as budgeting households forego their day-trips.
Hearing this, I was at once concerned for my favourite cafe at Yankalilla, and rushed out there as soon as I could to provide my vital business. I needn’t have worried – their customer base is completely sound.
Intending to take photos of their idiosyncratic decor, I instead discovered this donkey next door (Jenny) and 2 children who delightedly, had just discovered the donkey really didn’t bite – after much trepidition, and persuasion from their dad.
I have a huge compliment from Umbra101 who nominated this pic as his all-time fave for the Pay It Forward group -
“I have been looking through 70 pages of favourites, but always come back to this picture…. I love pictures that tell stories and this has captured a moment and the essence of childhood. Also the attention seeking donkey cracks me up ;))”
Umbra is a mean candids photographer, and takes many street scene & people pics around London, which he post-processes in his inimitable contrasty b/w style.
I take the opportunity here to profusely thank Umbra for his compliment, and add how much I enjoy the sense of humour he packs along with those quirky shots!

Excellent capture of childhood, love the look on her face . The lnatural ighting looks good too.
Thankyou Glenn – I tried to salvage the ‘blowouts’ on the boy’s face and the girl’s hair with some software manipulation, but ultimately I guess getting the technical rightness is secondary to catching the right expression.
I love the way she’s touching his nose, all set to jump if he moves!
A nervous excitment on her face :)
what a beautiful
she is amazing
Thankyou Antanas, she’s adorable – but the donkey’s handsome too:)
Aww Too Cute Shallay! Well done!
Thankyou MaddyPaddy, you have some very nice work that I’ve just quickly had a look at. Hope you do put some in groups soon, because that’s how people get to see it. Thankyou for complimenting my photo – you get a free pat of the donkey for that :)
wonderful picture shallay…that donkey cracks me up, he’s seen it all lol
Yeah, the donkey’s great – an old stalwart. It makes an interesting contrast to see their separate reactions – the donkey and child.
ps….Yankalilla ? that beats spitalfield, hands down ;)
Hah! You got me this time! lol
Funny thing is as you drive between Myponga and Yankalilla, the farmers start mixing up the names on their fence signs so you get hybrids like ‘Yankaponga’ – though I am rather fond of Nunhead :))
Great candid shot! Such wonder on their little faces!
Aren’t children great!? ‘Wonder’ is the right word… Thankyou Joanne
Just love this cute image!
Thankyou for featuring me, a great delight!
