The Healing Stone

Long ago in Okinawa, Japan, a little girl named Mae Ling lived with her loving father Tao Ling. Her mother had since passed due to a threatening disease and her father was left to raise her by himself. Her father, Tao Ling, was a famous potter in their quaint little town. Mae Ling loved her father’s pottery and loved to help him. One day, Mae Ling was playing in the garden when she heard her father cry out in pain. She went to go see what happened and found her father crouched over his pottery wheel clutching his hands together. “What’s wrong daddy?” asked Mae Ling. “It has become painful for me to work at the wheel and my hands have gone numb” her father answered. “But daddy you need your hands to make the pots.” Mae said. “I know sweetie. But don’t worry, daddy will be fine, he just has to ask the shopkeeper down the road for some medicine.” Her father replied. Mae Ling was worried about her father and hoped the shopkeeper would find something to remedy his hands’ numbness. When her father came home however, he had a sad look on his face and heavy message to bear. “What’s wrong daddy?” asked Mae. Her father sadly replied “Well sweetie, the shopkeeper told me that my condition can’t be healed by mere herbs. Unfortunately, daddy needs a miracle.” The next few days were tough on the Lings. With Tao’s hands out of commission, Mae took on a lot of the responsibilities of the house. When her father appeared to get worse and more depressed, Mae Ling decided to seek out the wisdom of the village elder. “O wise elder, my father’s hands are constantly numb and it makes me sad to see him like this. Is there anything out there that can cure him?” Mae asked. “There is only one thing that can cure your father’s condition, the healing stone. You must seek out the Great Dragon who guards the healing stone and only gives it to those whose quests are pure” answered the wise elder. “Anything to help my father get better” Mae said.
Mae began a long and difficult journey crossing rivers, climbing hills, and hiking through the woods. After three long days Mae finally reached the Cave of Great Wisdom where the Great Dragon resides. When she entered the cave, she found the Great Dragon sitting as though he had been waiting for her arrival. “O wise Great Dragon I seek the healing stone” Mae exclaimed. The Great Dragon stepped towards Mae and replied, “Why do you seek the healing stone young one?” “My father’s hands have gone numb and he is so depressed. I wish to heal him so he can make his beautiful pottery and be happy again” Mae humbly replied. “Then your quest is truly pure as the stone is not for you but for your father. I shall give you the stone because you have such love for your father that you would risk your life coming here” said the wise Great Dragon. “O thank you” exclaimed Mae.
After receiving the stone Mae went home to heal her poor father. As soon as she put the stone on his hands he was cured. Her Father Tao was overjoyed and embraced Mae saying, “You are the bravest little girl I’ve ever known!” To this day, Mae and her father have lived happily making pottery and healing sick neighbors with the wonderful healing stone that the Great Dragon had bestowed.

A short story I wrote on the fly as part of a Creative Writing Project I took for 4-H. I actually think I was able to organize my thoughts pretty well for this story. I enjoyed writing it as I went along. (I love to hear comments from my followers/readers.)
