The Witching Hour

I hear those voices that come just before sleep
They chant
They sway to and fro under my closed eyelids
I dance to the beat of their insanity

The wind is alive tonight
Pushing silently, then
Pausing
And waiting for the next rush

The dawn awakens inside my bones

Bare earth, silken breath of mountains and streams
Closed defenseless night
Limpid as the sun threatens to beckon

I am all the loneliness of the moon
To be seen by many eyes
Yet remain alone
Untouchable

But before first light
When the stars say it’s time to shine
I will spread my arms
And dance

The Witching Hour
