Tragic Hero

The Tragic Hero gallops onto the field…

The light of his anguished soul streams through the cracks in his armor,
his ragged, scarred heart upon his sleeve for all to see.

He searches the crowd, hoping to catch the eye of the fickle love

that runs both hot and cold for him.

The object of his affection – now the prize of another-

watches with distracted interest from the sidelines.

Weakened by his wounds, the Hero had hoped to sustain himself with a token -

some scrap of love that says he is in his paramour’s thoughts.

It didn’t come today…Perhaps tomorrow, or the day after.

Sometimes hope is all a Hero has.

The Hero, if destined to see another dawn, will look to his love tomorrow.

With a sigh of tortured longing, he steels himself up….

…and rides out to battle the dragon.
