I will not hold your suffering, I will let mine go

deny me.
hurt me.
burn me.
hate me.
spit on me with those eyes.
try to make a martyr out of me.

it doesn’t matter,
I will not seduce the suffering
any longer.

I let it go.

I paint my face Da Vinci instead,
feeling the warmth
of his brush
beneath my skin,
painting my heart inside out.
My tears are still learning
to love.

I am more than
you want from me.
I know how to be
the tall field of grass and wind,
each threading into the other
in the face of an angry monsoon.

I know how it feels to smile—
how not to cry
from the heat rolling off of your tongue
and out
of your hissing eyes.

I remember how to love.
And I love you despite it all.
I have learned to love.

I have learned
how to be
my own rain.
