Bougainvillea (variety not known). These glorious flowering vines were first discovered in 1767 in Brazil by Commerson on an expedition led by the french Admiral Louis de Bougainville. In 1769 it is known that while rounding the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Louis de Bougainville stopped in Table Bay and visited the Dutch Governor to pay his respects at Constance (Constantia), just up the road from where this particular bush grows now. The bright purple “flowers” are in fact modified leaves or bracts that surround the actual flowers within.
