Artist's Description

The fallow is the only British deer with palmate (flattened) antlers.
Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped from 3 years old.
In the first two years the antler is a single spike.
The adult female gives birth to a single fawn in June after a gestation of 229 days.
Fallow deer are the most prominent in The New Forest (thought to have been introduced into Britain by the Normans) and although easily scared away they can often be seen during a quiet forest walk.
If spooked, fallow deer will often only run into the immediate cover and watch from there, rather than disappearing completely.
