Artist's Description

The eider’s nest is built near to the sea and is lined with the eiderdown that has been plucked from the female’s breast.
This soft and warm lining has for years been used for filling pillows and quilts but in the last few years it has been largely replaced by down from domestic farm geese and man made synthetic alternatives.
Eiderdown pillows or quilts are now a rarity but eiderdown harvesting still continues as it can be done after the ducklings leave the nest with no harm to the birds.
