Artist's Description

early evening in a small section of a city in a massive rainforest. (it’s kind of inspired by Robin Hobb’s Rain Wilds communities.)
in this place, the ground is too wet & unstable to support buildings, so the residents have made use of the trees & lifted the city up into them. the suburbs are one above the other, instead of next to each other, as in most cities!
at the bottom, where there is the least movement, you can see the public walkways, business & shopping district, & large wealthy homes that need more support. further up is a suburb of lightweight orb shaped dwellings made from tough waterproof fabric on aluminium frames. further up in the canopy where there is more sunlight (& not really visible here) are the potted farms & power stations.
there are hints of cables here & there supporting structures, providing walkways, & working the elevators & cable cars.

oil on board, about 40-45 hours (took about a month!) 120 X 60cms

i had so much fun with this one! i felt like a little kid, doing one of those complicated drawings they do of their ideal houses etc! it was a bugger to photograph though: i took about 50 pics before i got one that didn’t cut too many details out! it really is one that looks amazing in real life (if i do say so myself!)
my son says he lives in the very top yellow orb, & my daughter says she’s the girl at the bottom, kissing that guy..
