My Native Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville
City of horses
The Kentucky Derby
Ghosts
Bourbon
The Seelbach Hotel
A hotel often visited by Al Capone
F. Scott Fitzgerald
And sometimes John Dillinger.
Pleasant-looking city
With pretty Victorian houses
And a violent history.
Whenever I read about
The Mexican drug cartels
I cannot help but be reminded of Kentucky
Because it also experienced similar violence
During Prohibition
When the makers of moonshine
In hideout stills
And Prohibition agents
Warred with each other.
This is where my roots are.
This is who I am.
And who I really am
Is not what many people think I am.
Louisville hasn’t always been
What it appears to be now either.
I spent most of my childhood in New York.
How sophisticated
Yet in some ways
Very sheltered
That environment was.

Artist's Description

I was born in Louisville, and my family is originally from there. I was raised in New York and went to school in Boston, and I now live in San Francisco. Recently, I have been researching my family roots, and in doing so learned fascinating things about Louisville’s history I never knew before. I am very proud to be from the Derby City.
